Camp NaNoWriMo

It is time for July's Camp NaNoWriMo. I'm using this camp to start my new novel and hope to finish it off in November's NaNoWriMo.

Hecate's Collection of Elephants

Synopsis

Hecate has inherited magic from her grandmother. A gift she cannot control.

Using magic to harm others is taboo and Hecate has broken this fundamental law. She must pay for her wrongdoing or dishonoured and shame will overshadow her family forever. As punishment, her magic is to be harnessed until she has served her penance.

Hecate’s grandmother knows her granddaughter has a good heart, and although disappointed in her, she is lenient and declares Hecate’s magic must be contained within an object and can only be given as a gift.

A situation beyond her control results in tragedy, and Hecate must act quickly to save the life of a stranger. The only object within reach is an ornamental elephant.

Determined to atone, restore her grandmother’s trust in her and recover the use of her magic, Hecate’s gifts start small, but word about the magical elephants spreads and her life takes an altogether different path to the one she had mapped out.

The Pagan Tree

Synopsis

Veronica Rowland has found the ideal hideaway, an old mill conversion located on the outskirts of a rural English hamlet. At the end of the lane is an ancient rag tree, adorned with prayers and wishes, newly placed, and long forgotten, of locals and passers-by.

But something is stirring within the house, a presence reaching out to her. A discovery sets a chain of events in motion, and a dark secret leads Veronica to the rag tree.

Excerpt

I was not alone in the room. The hairs on the back of my neck prickled with the sensation of something passing behind me. I imagined that if I turned my head, just a fraction, he would be there.

               April 2017 is Camp NaNoWriMo

I've set myself a 25,000 word count for the month, and will be writing a short story.
The Pagan Tree is a classic ghost story, a genre I've not yet attempted and am looking forward to tackling.
